There are lots of web application firewall solutions (also known as WAF) nowadays. There are even different kinds of WAF: appliance-based, cloud-based, server-based, and application-based. But how can you know which kind of WAF fits your bill? Previously, WebRanger has been compared as an alternative to CloudFlare. This time let’s compare WebRanger and Incapsula.
What is WebRanger?
WebRanger is security solution that proactively protects your website or web applications from incoming threats, 24×7. It is a combination 3 key solutions that make WebRanger unique and effective: a Web Application Firewall (or WAF), an analytics platform, and easy communication with a team of security experts.
What is Incapsula?
Incapsula is a cloud-based application delivery platform. Incapsula has different features that are used for security and optimizing website performance. Like CloudFlare, it uses a global content delivery network to provide website security, DDoS protection, load balancing and failover services to clients. WAF is also one of Incapsula’s feature. It provides websites protection from various attacks like SQL injection, cross site scripting, illegal access of resource, and OWASP top ten threats. It also covers web 2.0 threats that include comment spam, fake registrations, website scraping, and malicious bots.
Features of Incapsula
Back in 2012, Incapsula launched an online community-sourced information directory about bots or non-human entities known as Botopedia.org. This is where Incapsula gets its anti-bot defense capability. Incapsula also features a backdoor protection called Backdoor Protect. It works by comparing traffic against a database of known backdoors to prevent unauthorized access from backdoors. Two-factor authentication, in which Incapsula branded as Login Protect, is an integrated addition to their products that they announced in 2013. The most recent addition to Incapsula is the turnkey SIEM which was just added last April of 2015. The SIEM is a solution that help manage multiple technologies by acting as a centralized environment in analyzing security information from various sources. So why is it that WebRanger is a great alternative to Incapsula?
In the table above, the features of the each WAF has been laid down. Each one to its own strengths. When paired together it becomes an unbeatable duo, a strong line of defense.
If you want security + website speed optimization then Incapsula is for you. They also have good reputation in handling DDos Attacks as they were able to handle one of the Internet’s largest attack during the October of 2013. It was reported that the attack lasted for nine hours that peaked at 100 Gigabits of traffic. Like CloudFlare, Incapsula is also platform agnostic because service is provided via DNS. However, DNS would mean that it would not able to protect intranet web applications from attacks. It can protect web applications from any web attack but doesn’t protect the web application from internal threats.
If you want an app-based WAF that is utilized with the SIEM + SOC that handles 24×7 continuous web application monitoring and incident response then the WebRanger is an option for you to choose. Also being an app-based WAF, WebRanger is able to protect your web apps from internal threats as well.
